"Subcutaneous Volvulus" is a collection of recordings produced by Charles Rice Goff III in collaboration with various composers during the spring of 2010. Seven of the eight compositions presented in this collection feature sounds created on a Korg R3 Vocoder/Synthesizer, a device which jumped into the Taped Rugs bag of sonic tricks in March of 2010.
Specifics:
1) Goff created Track 1: "Neusicular Frejamme," specifically as an audio accompaniment for an original animated video. An MPEG 2 file of the video is included in this archive.
Recorded May 18th, 2010.
2) Track 2: "-INGcantation," is the first official -ING production since the release of the highly-acclaimed "Re-INGcarnation" album earlier in 2010. Vernon Lawton provided Goff with a recording which he had cooked-up in his Seattle, Washington, home studio, and Goff embellished it into the form presented here. Lawton's source mix contained percussion, guitar, bass, and synthesizer. Goff added vocoder, synthesizer, and bits from a prerecorded tape which was played through the vocoder's audio input. This piece marks Goff's first use of vocoder in a recorded composition.
Recorded March 21st, 2010.
3) Tracks 3, 4, and 5 were originally created for a collaborative project involving Goff and Eric Matchett, which was to be dubbed: "Korglaboration." Matchett had acquired a Korg Microsampler around the same time that Goff had acquired his Korg Vocoder/Synthesizer, and the two composers had agreed to create an album of recordings which employed both of these instruments on all of the tracks. Unfortunately, Goff and Matchett, despite sharing a long history of working together on various projects, discovered early on in their endeavor that they could not agree on the musical qualities which they each wanted to project in their collaborative recordings. As a result, they agreed to abandon the project after completing the three pieces presented here.
4) Track 3: "Now Jack Wishes He Confessed To No One," features Matchett's sampled piano, overdubbed with cut-up layers of vocoder/synthesizer, several of which include elements from a prerecorded tape which was played through the vocoder's audio input.
Recorded May 24th, 2010.
5) Track 4: "Vinyl Siding," is a "live-in-the-studio" recording of Goff playing vocoder/synthesizer with Matchett's sampled guitar bits running through the vocoder's audio input. The theme of this piece relates to a stressful series of events involving Goff's home improvements during the spring of 2010.
Recorded June 8th, 2010.
6) Track 5: "Broadcasted," features Matchett's guitar samples and media broadcast samples blended into an atmospheric synthesizer wash supplied by Goff. Goff remixed Matchett's first concoction of these elements into the form presented here.
Recorded June 3rd, 2010.
7) Track 6: "Gumby Veil," is the only recording in this collection which does not in some way involve the Korg R3 vocoder/synthesizer. Goff created it as his first of several contributions to the ten year anniversary celebration of the Tapegerm Collective, located on the internet at: www.tapegerm.com . Goff edited together audio loops from Buzzsaw The Shavings, Blind Mime Infection, Dave Fuglewicz, Jesus Crash My Soft Synth, and Mentally Anguished to create this composition. It also appears on the Tapegerm Collective CDR entitled: "Ten Years Infection, Vol. 1."
Recorded April 26th, 2010.
8) Track 7: "They Summoned Me With Skweeing Liquid," is another of Goff's contributions to Tapegerm's tenth anniversary celebration. Goff modified vocal samples from Jeremy Gluck (aka: Datawhore) and mixed them into a matrix of vocoder/synthesizer and electronic guitar, glued together with a Boss loop duplicator. Goff described his compositional process for his fellow Tapegerm brethren thus:
"The Skweeing Liquid was produced after the Gluck was harvested and brought to the nest. Broken down into nucleotidal polymorphisms, the Gluck was rearranged and stored into wave cells, which then reproduced and comingled over a Goffic substrate. The resulting gel was heated over a kettle of boiling milk, forming the Skweeing Liquid that summoned me. When I arrived, all was in order."
This composition also appears on the Tapegerm Collective CDR entitled: "Germination Number 12, Volume 2."
Recorded May 20th, 2010.
9) Track 8: "Acrylic Olive Oil," is a "live-in-the-studio" recording of Goff playing vocoder/synthesizer with several samples of circuit-bent Casio PT180 sounds created by Dan Richert running through the vocoder's audio input. This recording was made prior to the celebrations of Tapegerm's tenth anniversary. Goff described his compositional process for his fellow Tapegerm brethren thus:
A) Loaded ALL of Richert loops into a portable MP3 player
B) Plugged MP3 player (set to "loop replay") into "Audio In" of Korg R3 Vocoder Synthesizer
C) Plugged Synthesizer into Boss Loop Duplicator
D) Improvised using Richert loops as primary sound input
E) Slight "clean-up" editing
F) Delivered to your ears
This composition also appears on the Tapegerm Collective CDR entitled: "Germination Number 5, Volume 2."
Recorded March 23rd, 2010.
